Tropical Mermaid Smoothie

The not-so-new mermaid smoothie has been out for quite some time now and I finally fell for it. I took one of my favorite smoothie recipes and played around with it to make it work with the “mermaid smoothie”. But what is it that makes it an actual mermaid smoothie? Besides the pretty blue green color it has it is actually the algae in it! Seaweed? Real mermaid food!?

Wait did you say seaweed?

Well yes I did, it is actually pond scum called Spirulina. Before I scare you away with trying to feed you algae, hear me out. Spirulina actually reaps in health benefits, and there is no “fishy” taste IF you buy the right one.

Spirulina is packed with:

  • Antioxidants
  • Protein
  • Vitamins B1,B2,B3
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids

All that help your body work the way it is supposed to! 

Now there are a few precautions about Spirulina you need to pay attention to when buying and ingesting it.

  1. Some Spirulina products have not been properly harvested. This means toxins may be in the product. It is important to buy Organic. For a safe option try the:
  2. Do not overtake this supplement. Yes it is filled with so many healthy ingredients but too much of anything (besides Jesus) is not good for you. The recommended daily “dose” of Spirulina is 1 teaspoon.
  3. Always check with your doctor especially if you are someone with an autoimmune disease. This is a supplement and you want to make sure it is right for your body first.

Being a lover of smoothies myself, this one about tops the charts! I played around with some of my favorite tropical flavors and mixed them all together in my Ninja Blender and viola! Pure magic! Here is the recipe to try it out, tomorrow we are making it as a smoothie bowl!

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 Banana
  • 1 scoop Spirulina (1 teaspoon)
  • ½ tbsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 cup Coconut Milk
  • ½ cup Frozen Pineapple
  • ½ cup Frozen Mango
  • ½ cup Frozen Blueberries
  • 4-6 Ice Cubes
  • ½ tbsp Chia Seeds

Instructions

  • Place all soft ingredients into the blender, add the frozen ingredients after.
  • Blend on high for 45 seconds.
  • Pour and enjoy!
